Sun Safety Tips for Beachgoers

Use Plenty of Sunscreen
For a day at the beach, chose a water-resistant sunscreen with a minimum 30 SPF (Sun Protection Factor). Following the suggested FDA guidelines, a "water-resistant" product must maintain its SPF after 40 minutes of water immersion, and a "very water-resistant" product, after 80 minutes. For effective ultraviolent A (UVA) radiation protection, select products that have some combination of the following ingredients: avobenzone, ecamsule (a.k.a. MexorylTM), oxybenzone, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.
To ensure that you get the full SPF of a sunscreen, apply 1 ounce (about a shot glass full) 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the ingredients to fully bind to the skin. The Skin Cancer Foundation suggests putting sunscreen on before putting on your bathing suit. Not only will it provide extra protection to the skin underneath, but you are less likely to miss spots and end up with sunburn along the edges of your bathing suit. Don't forget to apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet.
Don't forget to bring sunscreen with you and reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming, toweling off, or sweating a great deal. A half day at the beach requires at least two applications of sunscreen.
Cover  Up
Protect your head, face and eyes with a broad-brimmed hat (at least 3" all the way around) and sunglasses that filter out 99 to 100 percent of UV radiation. Cover up with long sleeves and pants when you aren't swimming. For women, brightly colored, long sarongs are another good option. Or opt for specially made sun protective clothing with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 30 or higher. A product with a UPF of 30 will allow just 1/30th of the sun's UV radiation to penetrate the cloth. Surfers should wear a rash guard or surf shirt.

Seek the Shade and Plan Your Visit Accordingly
The sun is most intense between 10 AM and 4 PM, so why not try an early morning or late afternoon trip? You'll avoid the crowds (and traffic) and have the beach to yourself. And you'll get to enjoy the calm of daybreak or a stunning sunset. Early birds might consider heading to the beach by 7 or 8 AM and plan to leave by noon. Late risers might opt to arrive after 3 PM and can stay as long as they like.
We do not recommend spending an entire day at the beach, but if you do, be sure to take periodic "shade breaks" under a beach umbrella. However, not all umbrellas are created equal. The most effective ones provide a minimum UPF 30.
With a few simple precautions, you can enjoy a beach excursion without risking your skin's health.

Pão de Queijo

Brazil is famous for its pão de queijo - cheese rolls with soft chewy centers. Pão de queijo is made with cassava flour (tapioca flour), the ground root of the manioc plant. They smell wonderful when they are baking, and plump up into perfect round balls. Many recipes call for parmesan, but if you can find the Brazilian cheese queijo minas in your local Brazilian market, your pão de queijo will be even more authentic. Regular farmer's cheese or any other firm, fresh cows milk cheese work well in this recipe.

Churrasco

Originally the standard formula for Brazilian style barbecue was to coat meats in coarse salt. The meat would then sit for about 30 minutes to absorb the salt and then was placed over the fire. Later a salt-water baste was used to keep meats moist during the cooking. Beef was typically never seasoned. Poultry and lamb, however are spiced with a rich marinade the night before cooking. Meats are places on long sword-like skewers and cooked over an open fire.

Feijoada

Feijoada is one of Brazil's national treasures. This is a dish that is meant to serve a group, and the preparation begins the night before. Several kinds of smoked meats, ribs, and beef jerky are simmered with the black beans. The meats are removed and served separately on a platter. The other traditional accompaniments are Brazilian-style rice, collard greens (couve a mineira), farofa (toasted manioc meal), hot pepper sauce, and orange wedges (to help with digestion).

Fortaleza

Fortaleza is a major tourist destination for the domestic Brazilian market.
Further along the beach front is the new pier and later the roller skating area close to Iracema beach.
During the day time the beaches of Praia do Futuro are used as those near the Beira Mar are not considered clean. In Praia de Futuro tourists will find several good quality beach complexes of which the most popular are Crocobeach, Atlantidiz and Cocobeach. Food in any one is of standard beach quality and the atmosphere of a holiday nature. These close when the sun goes down and the area becomes rather dark and deserted at night. Hotels in this area should be avoided. Fortaleza is the number one destination for Brazilian tourists, after Rio de Janeiro.
In addition to the beach visitors can see the cathedral, the fort, the popular market, major shopping centres (such as Iguatemi) as well as other beaches (cumbuco, beach park, or further afield)
Scuba diving is possible in the area of Pedra da Risca do Meio State Marine Park, a marine protected area located about 10 nautical miles from the shoreline of Fortaleza.
Urban beaches
Fortaleza has about 25 kilometres (16 mi) of urban beaches. From North to South, the urban beaches of Fortaleza are Iracema, Meireles, Mucuripe and Praia do Futuro. Each beach has its own peculiarities:
·         Iracema is the bohemian beach, with bars and nightclubs;
·         Meireles is where locals and tourists go to stroll, and is also the area with the highest number of hotels in Fortaleza;
·         Mucuripe is the place of jangadas. Still used by fishermen to go into high seas, jangadas can be seen along the way during the afternoon and evenings, and returning from the sea in the morning; part of the catch of the day is sold in an old style fish market. Also, the boat trips leave from this area;

·         Praia do Futuro is about 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) long, and is the preferred one for bathing and surfing. Praia do Futuro was made famous by its barracas (rustic and sophisticated restaurants built on the beach sand). Barraca Cabumba is the local meeting point for the gay and lesbian community.

Brasília

Brasília is the federal capital of Brazil and the seat of government of the Federal District. Administratively, the city is located in the Federal District which is in the Central-West Region. Physically, it is located in the Brazilian Highlands. It has a population of about 2,562,963, making it the fourth largest city in Brazil. As the national capital, Brasília is the seat of all three branches of the federal government of Brazil. The city also hosts the headquarters of many Brazilian companies. Planning policies such as the location of residential buildings around expansive urban areas, as well as building the city around large avenues and dividing it into sectors, have sparked a debate and reflection on life in big cities in the 20th century. The city's design divides it into numbered blocks as well as sectors for specified activities, such as the Hotel Sector, the Banking Sector or the Embassy Sector. Brasília hosts 124 foreign embassies.

The Cathedral of Brasília in the capital of the Federative Republic of Brazil, is an expression of the architect Oscar Niemeyer. This concrete-framed hyperboloid structure, seems with its glass roof reaching up, open, to the heavens. On 31 May 1970, the Cathedral’s structure was finished, and only the 70 m (229.66 ft) diameter of the circular area were visible. Niemeyer's project of Cathedral of Brasília is based in the hyperboloid of revolution which sections are asymmetric. The hyperboloid structure itself is a result of 16 identical assembled concrete columns. These columns, having hyperbolic section and weighing 90 t, represent two hands moving upwards to heaven. The Cathedral was dedicated on 31 May 1970.

Praça dos Três Poderes (Portuguese for Square of the Three Powers) is a plaza in Brasília. The name is derived from the encounter of the three federal branches around the plaza: the Executive, represented by the Palácio do Planalto (presidential office); the Legislative, represented by the National Congress (Congresso Nacional); and the Judicial branch, represented by the Supreme Federal Court(Supremo Tribunal Federal).
It is a tourist attraction in Brasília, designed by Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer as a place where the three branches would meet harmoniously.

The Juscelino Kubitschek bridge, also known as the 'President JK Bridge' or the 'JK Bridge', crosses Lake Paranoá in Brasília. It is named after Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira, former president of Brazil. It was designed by architect Alexandre Chan and structural engineer Mário Vila Verde. Chan won the Gustav LindenthalMedal[22] for this project at the 2003 International Bridge Conference in Pittsburgh due to "...outstanding achievement demonstrating harmony with the environment, aesthetic merit and successful community participation".
It consists of three 60 m (200 ft) tall asymmetrical steel arches that crisscross diagonally. With a length of 1,200 m (0.75 miles), it was completed in 2002 at a cost of US$ 56.8 million. The bridge has a pedestrian walkway and is accessible to bicyclists and skaters.

The Palácio do Planalto is the official workplace of the President of Brazil. It is located at the Praça dos Três Poderes in Brasília. As the seat of government, the term "O Planalto" is often used as a metonym for the executive branch of government.
The main working office of the President of the Republic is in the Palácio do Planalto. The President and his family do not live in it, rather in the official residence, thePalácio da Alvorada. Besides the President, senior advisors also have offices in the "Planalto," including the Vice-President of Brazil and the Chief of Staff. The other Ministries are along the Esplanada dos Ministérios.
The architect of the Palácio do Planalto was Oscar Niemeyer, creator of most of the important buildings in Brasília. The idea was to project an image of simplicity and modernity using fine lines and waves to compose the columns and exterior structures.
The Palace is four stories high, and has an area of 36,000 m2. Four other adjacent buildings are also part of the complex.

The Palácio da Alvorada is the official residence of the President of Brazil. The palace was designed, along with the rest of the city of Brasília, by Oscar Niemeyerand inaugurated in 1958.
One of the first structures built in the republic's new capital city, the "Alvorada" lies on a peninsula at the margins of Lake Paranoá. The principles of simplicity and modernity, that in the past characterized the great works of architecture, motivated Niemeyer. The viewer has an impression of looking at a glass box, softly landed on the ground with the support of thin external columns.
The building has an area of 7,000 m2 with three floors consisting of the basement, landing, and second floor. The auditorium, kitchen, laundry, medical center, and administration offices are at basement level. The rooms used by the presidency for official receptions are on the landing. The second floor has four suites, two apartments, and various private rooms which make up the residential part of the palace.
The building also has a library, a heated Olympic-sized swimming pool, a music room, two dining rooms and various meeting rooms. A chapel and heliport are in adjacent buildings.
